As we enter the holiday season, as well as what promises to be a heated political season, it can be useful to have a game plan for engaging with loved ones and others on difficult topics in a constructive and kind way.
The following tactics were put forward by No Labels, a group established in 2009 that calls itself "a unique American movement" dedicated to "the commonsense majority." This approach allows for understanding and a peaceful exchange of ideas.
Embrace Civility: Start with respect. Remember, everyone at your table cares deeply about our country, even if their views differ from your own. Approach each conversation with an open heart and an open mind.
Listen More, Speak Less: Sometimes, the most powerful contribution we can make to a conversation is to listen. Give people the space to express their views without interruption. You might find more common ground than you expect.
Focus on Shared Values: Try to steer the conversation towards shared goals and values. Reviewing this list of 30 ideas to help the country that most Americans agree upon can help you in the moment.
Agree to Disagree: It's okay to have different opinions. Acknowledge these differences and remember that they don't define your entire relationship.
Margaret White, of No Labels, concluded, “Finally, remember that the holidays are a time of gratitude and connection. Let's cherish these moments with our loved ones and celebrate what unites us as a nation.”
