Sheriff Warns of Rampant Online Scams
By Denise Rivette
The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind the public to be extremely cautious when interacting with strangers online, especially through dating apps and social media platforms. Scammers are actively targeting individuals by posing as potential romantic interests, convincing victims to share personal information or photos, and then threatening to send those materials to family or friends unless money is paid.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
Never send photos, videos, or messages that you wouldn’t want shared publicly.
Be cautious with whom you exchange your phone number or contact info with online.
If someone threatens you or demands money in exchange for not sharing your personal information do not respond and do not pay.
Block the number and report the account immediately.
Contact your local law enforcement agency to report the incident.
Carbon County Sheriff Josh McQuillan wants victims to know that these scams can happen to anyone. When asked what advice he would give to someone who finds themselves victimized, McQuillan said, “These scammers are good at their job and have victimized intelligent and successful people. If it happens to you, please report it as soon as possible. Scammers count on feelings of shame to prevent reporting. You are a victim and the Sheriff’s office is here to help you find justice. The sooner we can start an investigation, the better chance we have of achieving that goal.”
