Flour Power
The well-attended First Annual Wings & Wheels Fly/Cruise-In ended its food, fun and education filled morning with a Flour Bombing competition. As there wasn’t a written program, the word spread among the crowd that something called a “Flower Bombing” would signal the end of the festivities. Speculations ranged from flowers being tossed from planes onto the crowd to possibly something more hippie inspired. Slower to spread was the word that Flour Bombing is a competition where planes fly over an area and try to hit a target on the ground, in this case a beautiful shiny red truck, with a dropped bag of flour. Wings & Wheels with its grand finale is sure to become a local celebration of the end of summer for many years to come.
The Wings and Wheels event showcased a variety of aircraft as well as an impressive collection of cars with informational booths manned by Rocky Mountain College, Red Lodge Flying Club, Genuine Aircraft Hardware Co. and others. This event was made possible thanks to the hard work of the Friends of the Red Lodge Airport (FRED). All donations benefited FRED.
If you missed Wings & Wheels this year, mark your calendar for next. It’s a great time to mark the end the summer, meet up with friends and see what’s happening at the Red Lodge Airport - a Carbon County recreational and critical emergency resource. Giant Shrimp Take Over the Edgar Bar As Bands Take Over the Stage and Stormy Weather Threatens All
Spoiler: It’s Carbon County, the good times won!
The last Edgar Bar Shrimpfest of the year happened Sunday, September 3. The food consisted of Edgar Bar’s famous giant fried shrimp, steak cooked to order, corn on the cob and french fries. The party was already going strong at 3:15 though it wasn’t scheduled to start until 3:30. A storm front blew in hard for several minutes at approximately 3:25 threatening an unwelcome aerial relocation of the cooking shelter just as service was finding its groove. The able and good natured staff protected the food and supplies while customers held the shelter frame down until the wind gusts subsided, although the deluge continued. Competing with the downpour and the constant stream of heaping plates and colorful drinks (a watermelon, vodka, lime and agave concoction was particularly delicious), Lee Moran and Charlie Brandine easily took center stage, literally and figuratively, by capturing the crowd’s attention with their first few musical phrases. Soon after there was joyful dancing in the raindrops. Crow Country was up next, but my party left early to make room for others. If Charlie and Lee were any indication of the show to come, a great time was had by all!

It is free to submit events for either including birth announcements, obituaries, engagements, rights of passage, honors, public events, sales, etc. This is for all of you and I hope you’ll use it.
