President Clinton Got It Wrong in Speech Tonight
Claimed 50 million of 51 million jobs created in U.S. were created under Democratic administrations
By Denise Rivette
This evening during the Democratic National Convention, former President Bill Clinton claimed that 50 million of the 51 million jobs created since 1989 were created during administrations led by Democrats. He claimed he checked it three times. The claim is worth fact checking. According to Politifacts:
The numbers for the past 35 years show about 97% of jobs have been created under Democratic presidents. (That’s 49 million of the 51 million jobs)
A longer look, going back 72 years, finds a smaller discrepancy, but the Democratic edge is still better than 2-1.
Policies have played a role in job creation, but so have timing and events beyond any president’s control.
So, Clinton claimed 50 million but the actual number, 49 million, was just shy of that? So, essentially, Clinton got it right. It’s a well-documented fact that, in general, the economy does better when Democrats are in charge.
