From Park County Sheriff’s Office
On December 21, 2024 at approximately 7:30 p.m., Park County 911 was advised by a Deputy on patrol of a fire located on the side of Interstate 90 near Livingston, Montana. The fire was spreading fast due to warm temperatures and 50-60 mile per hour winds.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the location of the rapidly spreading wildfire. Due to the fire moving quickly in dry grass and threatening residential homes and building, local evacuations were conducted in the immediate area.
After approximately 1.5 hours, firefighters gained full control of the fire, reporting that approximately 26 acres of land and property were damaged. This included outbuildings and grazing land for cattle.
Investigators obtained video evidence of a subject discharging a firework from a moving vehicle igniting dry grass. The suspect vehicle continued West on Interstate 90 after igniting the fire. Due to distance and darkness, a more detailed description of the vehicle is unavailable at this time.
This incident is being investigated as a criminal act, however, no arrests have been made at this time. No injuries were reported from the fire.
This incident is not associated with the fire near Big Timber in Sweet Grass County that was determined to have been started by a vehicle dragging chains.
If you saw a vehicle in the area or along Interstate 90 exhibiting suspicious behavior that may be connected with this arson or have other information about the incident you are urged to contact the Park County Sheriff’s Office at 406-222-2050.
