Murder/ Suicide in Carbon County

Press Release from the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office

On June 12, 2024 at approximately 9:30 p.m., deputies responded to a residence north of Silesia to do a welfare check on the residents. 

The welfare check was requested by friends who had been unable to contact the residents after receiving a concerning email from the male living at the residence.

When deputies arrived, they located an adult female and an adult male inside the residence, both deceased from gunshot wounds.  

After the scene was processed on Thursday and autopsies completed on both subjects Friday,  investigators were able to determine that Jerry Leggate, 70 yrs old, shot his wife, Laura Leggate, 62 years old, before shooting himself on the afternoon of Friday, June 7.  

Montana Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigations, assisted with the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing.
