On Monday, September 30, 2024, the academic counseling and post-residential case managers of the Montana Youth Challenge Academy (MYCA) were honored with the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Performance. Congratulations to Ben Stewart, Tammy Pittman, Chad Craig, and Melissa Robbins (now serving as acting Deputy Director for MYCA); as well as Michelle Nelon, Nate Bellinger, Kristin Novich, and Kerri Thomas.
Over the last year, our dedicated team has worked closely with over 210 students, whom we call cadets. Staff supported cadets in building vital life skills and professional competencies as they achieved high school completion and prepared for their next steps. Of these 210 cadets, 93% secured positive placements (a positive life track) upon their graduation, with 50% of them immediately entering the workforce.
A vital component of the Challenge program is the year-long post-residential follow-up, where graduates return to their hometowns to continue positive paths with the guidance of adult mentors and MYCA staff support. Last year, MYCA case managers assisted 216 graduates and their mentors, managing over 430 individuals statewide. Academy data shows that 81% of graduates sustain positive placements— employment, education, or military enlistment— four years after graduation.
These achievements rank among the highest of any Youth Challenge Program in the nation. This demanding work takes strong commitment, and the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Performance highlights both past accomplishments and the continued dedication needed to support and uplift the youth of Montana.
