On Friday, January 5, at 8:40 p.m., a Ford Fusion carrying four teenage Billings boys was eastbound on King Avenue West at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control resulting in an accident leaving one boy dead and the other three injured. According to the fatality report issued by Montana Highway Patrol, the vehicle left the roadway striking several rocks and continued eastbound striking another rock causing the vehicle to go airborne. The vehicle landed with the front end down causing the vehicle to flip, change direction and then roll several times. A 15 year old boy was ejected and sustained fatal injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt. The other three teenagers, two 17 year olds and a 16 year old, were transported with injuries to local hospitals. Their conditions are unreported at this time. Speed is the only suspected contributing factor to this accident. Billings Police Department is the primary investigating agency.
Friendly reminders:
Buckle your seat belt and use all safety equipment properly.
Drive alert and without impairment - If you’ve been partying, stay where you are. If you are hosting a party, make it a sleepover for those who have driven.
Even if you are late, there is no hurry. Far better to make it alive than not make it at all.
Slow down at night, when visibility is impaired, and when road conditions are not dry and clear. This is also the season of flash frozen roads and dashing deer.
Be aware of the area all around you. Even if you are driving perfectly, vehicles and other hazards are unpredictable. That’s why they are called accidents.
In addition, make sure you have a shovel and emergency survival equipment and supplies in your vehicle. Make sure your phone is charged. Make sure someone knows the route you are traveling and knows you arrived safely.
