Fire season has arrived! The Billings Office of the National Weather Service predicts a hot and dry weather pattern will lead to increasing fire danger over the next several days. Please avoid sparking a fire!
There is potential for high-based thunderstorms in the afternoons and evenings with gusty winds and spotty rainfall through the weekend. These storms may produce fires caused by lightning strikes. Be aware and be prepared.
Carbon County is taking proactive steps toward fire prevention now we’ve officially entered a potential red flag period. They have closed the burn permit service and have elevated the fire danger to "High" throughout the County. Also, fire severity shifts (personnel ready at the fire station and prepared for initial attack) are starting next week at Red Lodge Fire Rescue with DNRC funding.
Emergency services around the county are prepared respond to the expected increase in fires, motorcycle accidents, other accidents, medical emergencies and other situations that come with the peak summer season. Do your part to help them by being prepared, safe and aware.
Although the burn permit system is closed, camp fires are still allowed. Carbon County Fire Warden Tom Kohley wants everyone to enjoy their summer and just asks that people using recreational fires (contained fires less than 48 inches in diameter) be vigilant and have fire suppression tools and water nearby.
