In a press release issued by Red Lodge Fire Rescue Friday night, Carbon County Sheriff Josh McQuillan identified the hiker that fell into the East Rosebud Creek on Friday, July 12, as Dylan Honnoll of Minnesota. The release went on to state, “Dylan is believed to have suffered fatal injuries after falling into the rapids at the outlet of Rimrock Lake in the East Rosebud drainage” as he was attempting to cross the creek near the outlet of Rimrock Lake. Honnoll fell while hiking the well-known Beaten Path trail from East Rosebud Lake to Cooke City with a friend. He had just completed his sophomore year at Montana State University, was active in sports, and had spent a lifetime in the outdoors with his family and friends.
Red Lodge Fire Rescue (RLFR) in coordination with the Carbon County Sheriff's office is directing the ongoing search operations. It is believed he likely was trapped underwater near where he fell in. The Yellowstone County Sheriff’s helicopter flew the creek corridor Friday, July 19 and was able to identify additional items in the water between Rimrock Lake and an area of the creek known as Broadwater, about 500 yards downstream.
The press release concludes, “Our thoughts go out to Dylan’s family, friends and fellow students during this difficult time. Red Lodge Fire Rescue and the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office would also like to thank the many agencies and volunteers who assisted and continue to assist with this search, including the helicopter support provided by the Montana Army National Guard, Two Bear Air Rescue, and the Yellowstone County Sheriff's Department.”
Dylan was wearing a green t-shirt, black shorts, a white ball cap, blue sandals and was carrying a royal blue backpack. The public is asked to notify the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office at 406-446-1234 if they find anything they believe may be related to this incident.
