There has been an influx of scams and fraud calls recently. Some of them may seem routine, others easy to spot. Citizens are urged to be vigilant in protecting their personal information and accounts. Be mindful and cautious, always verifying the caller’s authenticity before giving any kind of personal details away.
January 27
Edgar Fire responded to a smell of gas in a shop. Upon investigation by fire personnel it was discovered the propane tank was out of fuel, owner recharged it and all was well.
Officers and Deputies regularly conduct building and area checks while on patrol. A Carbon County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Deputy noticed a building in Joliet that had lights on and a door open with no activity. Owner of the building was contacted and made aware of the situation. With the owner’s permission the CCSO turned off the lights and locked up the building.
January 28
There have been several slide offs due to drifting and ice just north of the Roberts Rest Area. Drive with caution in this area when weather is bad.
The Beartooth Ranger District has been doing several controlled burns off of West Fork Road with the focus being Silver Run Trailhead. Use caution when you going on adventures in this area. US Forest Service does advise Dispatch when they burn in Forest Service areas.
The Ski Mountain has received a lot of fresh snow, with that an increase in visitors to the mountain. Dispatch continues to get a number of accidental 911 calls from watches and cell phones detecting & reporting a crash. If your device accidentally calls 911, Dispatch will make numerous attempts to reach the owner to confirm if there is an emergency. Carbon County is required to call back and respond to all 911 hang up and misdials.
There was a report of a possible drunk driver on Highway 310, vehicle was reported to be swerving all over the road. CCSO Deputy located the vehicle and determined the driver was not intoxicated but was a distracted driver.
January 29
Montana Department of Transportation (MDOT) worked with the City of Red Lodge to remove snow from Broadway and side streets. Red Lodge Police Department (RLPD) worked on contacting vehicle owners to remove their vehicles for the first annual MDOT snow party.
There was report from an alarm monitoring company that a residential alarm was activated on Selms Road. The owners were contacted and not home. A deputy from the CCSO went out to investigate the residence and found no signs of intrusion. The Deputy made sure the residence was secure and contacted the owner before leaving.
January 30
Carbon County Dispatch requested assistance from CCSO Deputies, RLPD and Montana Highway Patrol (MHP) in locating a 911 caller that stated they needed to order two pizzas. Subsequent questions from the Dispatcher to the caller determined the individual needed assistance. Law Enforcement agencies searched the caller’s location extensively but were unable to find the caller or citizens in distress. After a thorough investigation Law Enforcement determined the call came from a disconnected number.
Laurel Police Department assisted CCSO in an active burglary call called in by older children at home alone who believed someone was in their home. Units that arrived on scene cleared the home and determined that it was a false alarm.
Red Lodge Police responded to a local eatery for harassment/disturbance. A patron was removed from the establishment and case has been forwarded to the City Attorney for review.
January 31
Citizen called in to complain her husband was always being detained at TSA and it has something to do with Carbon County. Caller was contacted by a Deputy and told there was nothing involving CCSO that would cause her husband would be detained for at the airport. Caller was told to speak to TSA and/or ICE about the ongoing issue.
Dispatch received a complaint from a citizen that their sibling, who they have rented from since July had locked them out of the residence and was going to force them to live in their car. RLPD spoke with both parties and determined the issue stemmed from a verbal disagreement between the siblings. Parties were able to work the issue out and caller was able to return to residence.
Red Lodge Police Sergeant responded to a complaint of kids who were throwing snowballs at the caller’s vehicle. Officer saw a large group of kids following each other on the South end of the city. Officer remained in the area.
February 1
Dispatch had their hands full receiving numerous complaints throughout the night about a group of unruly visitors in Red Lodge to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The group was involved in two disturbances, a hit and run crash and a call from a concerned citizen that someone was banging on his door believing that it was their VRBO. RLPD and CCSO Deputies responded to the calls and determined the involved parties were intoxicated and all calls were connected. RLPD followed up with the rebellious group the following morning and issued a number of citations and a date to see the City Court judge.
February 2
Bridger Police Department (BPD) responded to a neighbor dispute for a noise complaint. Caller felt she was being harassed by her upstairs neighbor for opening her closet door too loudly. Officer spoke with both parties about the complaint.
Dispatch received a call about a slide off crash, no injuries or road hazards were reported. Deputy on scene advised there was property damage. MHP gave Deputy go-ahead to issue the driver a white form. Local tow responded to pull vehicle out of the ditch.
Red Lodge Police Sergeant responded to a call of someone allegedly being hurt inside a vehicle. It appeared to the caller that the victim was trying to honk the horn. Caller reported to Dispatch that suspect was fleeing the scene. The Sergeant made swift contact with the suspect who explained the vehicle was experiencing mechanical failure where the horn was honking by itself. Sergeant confirmed no one else was in or around the vehicle.
