There has been an influx of scams and fraud calls recently. Some of them may seem routine, others easy to spot. Citizens are urged to be vigilant in protecting their personal information and accounts. Be mindful and cautious, always verifying the caller’s authenticity before giving any kind of personal details away.
People have a right to display political signs on their property. It is illegal to take or vandalize other people’s signs.
October 21
A reported scam was investigated by a deputy. The report was that a man with an accent called a woman through a suspicious number and claimed he was trying to deliver an Amazon package to her. The deputy called and spoke to the man, but the man hung up on him. The woman was told not to give her information out and to block the number.
A woman believed that someone was hacking her computer because she saw the cursor moving on her screen. She only wanted it documented and would not answer a deputy’s phone call to investigate.
October 22
An apartment renter asked law enforcement to find a way into his apartment after he locked himself out and didn’t want to wait for the landlord to let him back in. He was advised that this was not the officer’s responsibility due to liability. He then wondered if he had a neighbor with a ladder so he could borrow it to climb in, but was told this was not a good idea and he should wait for his landlord.
A Ford pickup rear-ended a pulled cargo trailer as they were traveling on the highway. The pickup caused extreme damage to the trailer when it essentially landed inside the trailer. Laurel EMS, Joliet Fire, CCSO and MHP responded.
Someone claiming to work with North Western Energy told a woman that her electricity would be shut off due to non-payment. She asked the caller to prove it and was then hung up on. She reported the fraud to RLPD.
October 23
Deputy responded to the Rockvale area for a reported assault. Indvidual reported he had picked up two hitchhikers and they assaulted him. Suspects left the victim at a parking lot and stole his car. Suspects were located at a gas station in Laurel shortly afterwards. Suspects were arrested and transported to YCDF. Investigation is ongoing.
October 25
Roberts Fire checked out what someone thought was a shed on fire, but discovered it was just a controlled burn that was permitted.
A mother asked for a deputy to check on her son since she hadn’t heard from him in a couple days and stated that was unusual. Contact was made and the son said he would call his mother.
October 26
A 911 caller said they just witnessed a vehicle veer off the road and hit a tree before the vehicle caught fire. The caller was able to pull the unresponsive driver, who was the single occupant of the vehicle, from the wreck before the fire went on to burn about an acre. Belfry, Bridger, and Red Lodge Fire and EMS responded along with deputies and MHP. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The accident is under investigation.
Joliet EMS responded to a car versus tractor collision on the highway with airbag deployment. They checked out the two individuals involved and they denied transport to a hospital.
Deputies responded to a disturbance near Bridger. One male was arrested for Partner/ Family Member Assault and transported to YCDF.
