DISPATCH WANTS YOU TO KNOW:
Due to recent report of an attempted scam, dispatch wants everyone aware of ongoing and evolving phone scams impersonating law enforcement in attempts to coerce people into paying large sums of money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. These scams can include threats of harm, outstanding warrants, court fees, fines, and other legal action. If you receive one of these calls or similar, ask for the name and/or badge number of the officer or deputy making the demands, and call the dispatch agency for the department the person claims they work for. It is wise to research and find the agency’s local dispatch phone number yourself, rather than calling phone numbers that have been given to you by the suspected scammer. These scammers are now providing phone numbers that link back to their associates or a scam center who may provide false badge/name verification of the ‘officer’ demanding payment. They may also use fake caller ID’s (aka “spoofing”) in order to trick you into thinking the “officer” is a real member of law enforcement. If you receive one of these calls, or suspect you have been the victim of a scam (including identity theft) please call Carbon County Sheriff’s Dispatch at 406-446-1234 option 1 to make a report or ask further questions.

A subject called in requesting a welfare check on their spouse, who was believed to possibly be having a medical issue. A RLPD officer arrived first and mentioned a possible verbal altercation. Upon speaking with both involved parties, Red Lodge EMS was cancelled at request of the purported patient. The officer left after confirming that no crime had been committed and all parties were safe.

A deputy saw a vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its hazard lights flashing. He stopped to see if he could assist the driver and passengers. All occupants of the vehicle were standing outside of the vehicle in the rain, one with his shirt covering his face. It was found that one of the passengers was playing with the safety pin on a can of bear spray for some unknown reason. As expected, it sprayed him in the face, which caused the driver to pull over so they could all breath fresh air and try to get the smell out of the vehicle, to the extent they could.
RLPD officer checked on a barking dog inside of a parked pickup close to midnight. He was able to contact the owners, who agreed to walk back from the bar to take care of their animal.
