Big Horn County Sheriff Darrell D. King, 55, of Kirby, Montana, whose Crow Indian name was Deaxkaashxiassee (Outstanding Eagle) and whose Cheyenne Indian name was “Hoxovena’hane” (Kills Across), passed away on November 19, 2023 in a vehicle accident. He was born April 30, 1968 to Lucille and Alvin Oliver Yarlott, Sr. and Rudolph King, Jr., in Billings, Montana. Darrell is both a Crow and Northern Cheyenne Tribal member. He was an enrolled Crow and belonged to the Big Lodge Clan.
He led a life filled with achievement and honor. He turned down recruitment by the Air Force Academy to join the Marines where he had an admirable career. After his discharge from the Marines, he began an equally admirable career in law enforcement. When his community asked him to run for Big Horn County Sheriff, he did and won. In that position, “Darrell understood the complexities surrounding jurisdictional and sovereignty within the Crow Reservation, Northern Cheyenne Reservation and Big Horn County. He was currently working with those issues to come up with solutions to improve the response to incidents to better benefit the residents of Big Horn County.”
Visitation will be on Saturday and Sunday, November 25 and 26, at Bullis Mortuary with a wake on Tuesday, November 28, at 4:00 p.m. at the Big Horn County Fairgrounds followed by his funeral service on Wednesday, November 29, at 10:00 a.m. at Lockwood High School Gym. Full details and obituary can be found on the Bullis Mortuary website.
